Ahhh, another snowy year at Sundance (particularly snowy this year) has come to a close. A lot of excellent films have been packed up in their canisters and sent to their new distributors. Even more will move along in the festival season, hoping to find a friendly home on some form of new-fangled download-to-your-alphanumeric-pager distro-strategy. But before these movies make it to screens of various sizes near you, I’d like to take you on a quick tour of all the titles I was able to catch this year. It’s a big weekend for Max Landis. Sure, the son of legendary director John Landis has a few screenplays [1] in various stages of production but this weekend marks his first to finally make it to the big screen, Chronicle (read a review here [2]). He’s also picked this weekend to release his much ballyhooed short film The Death and Return of Superman. The Death and Return of Superman, described as “an educational parody,” tells the hilarious, literal, insider version what happened in 1992 when DC Comics decided to kill, then resurrect, Superman. It’s a story many of us remember, but have long since forgotten. Starring Elijah Wood, Mandy Moore, Ron Howard, Chris Hardwick, Simon Pegg and more, you can check it out after the break. Here’s Max Landis’ short film, The Death and Return of Superman. Being as I was 12 when this happened, I have strong memories of buying Superman #75 and the hype surrounding it but haven’t thought, in the twenty years since, about the event’s cultural significance. Landis makes some good points here and keeps the entire thing highly entertaining to boot. But what do you think? Do you agree with Landis? Was the Death of Superman really the death of death in comics? Were you also disappointed he didn’t mention the Steel movie starring Shaquille O’Neal?
