October 18 is just around the corner, but if you were planning to spend that weekend decorating for your Halloween party, think again. Because that’s when Epic Pictures is set to unleash Big Ass Spider, an Oscar contender if ever we saw one, in theaters across the nation. Check out the trailer:
If that didn’t convince you to crack a can of PBR and hit Fandango immediately, we offer three reasons this hidden gem is a must-see.
1. Ray Wise Knows Exactly What He’s Doing
It didn’t take his run of “Funny or Die” shorts for us to recognize the straight-faced comic genius of Ray Wise. He had us at Reaper with his brilliant turn as Satan. He’ll play Major Braxton Tanner, in charge of containing the alien spider that escaped from a military lab, and there will be much rejoicing.
2. Cat-calls Welcome
This is exactly the kind of movie where snarky comments from the audience are considered added entertainment. The starring buddy duo of an exterminator (Greg Grunberg) and his sidekick (Lombardo Boyar) will have plenty of their own lined up, but you’ll easily be able to slip in a bon mot or two. Just keep it clean for the kids, OK?
3. Celebrate a Lost Tradition
The campy horror B-movie is a beloved tradition that’s begun to fade as affordable equipment and crowdfunding have turned anyone with a computer and a couple thou into a “serious auteur.” Do your part to bring back self-aware, schlocky humor with elevated production values.
